Helping end the diagnostic odyssey.
Traditionally, doctors will send off a test for each of the many infections they think might be causing a patient’s meningitis or encephalitis. Our approach breaks this paradigm. We use powerful gene sequencing technologies to look simultaneously for a wide range of infections with a single test.
Neurological Inflammation
Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain. Meningitis is inflammation of the coverings around the brain and spinal cord, and myelitis is inflammation of the spinal cord.
Inflammation of these central nervous system (CNS) tissues can be caused by a wide variety of infections, autoimmune diseases and other causes. Frequently, doctors are unable to identify the cause for a patient’s CNS inflammation.
How We Can Help
The UCSF Clinical Microbiology Laboratory offers a state-of-the-art test for identifying a huge range of infectious diseases of the CNS ranging from fungi, bacteria, viruses and parasites.
